Creating Secure Passwords and Accounts
Securing Your Online Accounts
Account security starts with good password practices.
Strong Password Guidelines
Your passwords should be:
- At least 12 characters long - A mix of letters, numbers, and symbols - Unique for each service - Not based on personal information
Password Managers
Consider using a password manager to:
- Generate strong, random passwords - Store passwords securely - Auto-fill login forms - Alert you to compromised passwords
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Enable 2FA wherever possible:
- SMS codes (better than nothing) - Authenticator apps (recommended) - Hardware keys (most secure)
> Important Notice: If a service offers 2FA, enable it. Most account compromises could be prevented with this single step.
Recovery Options
Prepare for lockouts:
- Keep backup codes in a safe place - Maintain access to recovery email/phone - Update recovery options when they change
Signs of Account Compromise
Watch for: - Login notifications from unknown locations - Password reset emails you did not request - Changes to your profile you did not make - Unusual activity in your account
If compromised: 1. Change password immediately 2. Review recent activity 3. Check connected accounts 4. Enable 2FA if not already active
